The Ice Climbing Tower at CNCC

When the little desert town that makes Rangely gets blasted with snow and ice, its almost as if residents live in a winter wonderland, with glistening white speckles everywhere that the kids go and gather up to hit you with when you least expect it. Colorado Northwestern Community College also begins the long process of allowing the Ice Tower to build and become a fun feature for winter. This tower is used to teach ice climbing techniques and classes are often offered through winter and middle and high school students are given the opportunity to participate.

Here is a close up view of the tower from the base. As you can see, it towers above the ground, and looks like a, well, a tower! its time to get winter gear, ropes and lots of hats and gloves and gather at the base.

Then up, up, up we go. Students learn basic technique that will aid them if they take on more ice climbing in the coming months through field trips, family trips, or other excursions. BRRRR! Its a good thing this student is wearing a heavy coat and thick leather gloves!

Have you tried the tower, or would like to? Leave us a comment and let us know what you think!
